Audrey Ruth Sheller, Mother of Kenny, Brenda, Dianna, and Ralph; grandmother to Brittani, Leah, Mandy, and Annie—great grandmother to Matt, Gavin, Max, and Emmett, left our world on Thursday, February 16, 2023.
She was 94 years old and ready to meet her maker. Forgiving and giving she was a great inspiration to many. The Lord will treat her very well when she arrives, she has a direct flight. She stayed as long as she could. She was a strong lady—one to be admired but there was another force in play.
Her daughter Brenda left us more than fifteen years ago. Paul her husband of 65 years, left us ten years ago.
Ralph was a newborn, but for a short couple of days, and is waiting to reunite with her. They have been waiting a long time. Now she has the warm comfort of their Father’s presence.
They were from a long-ago era. Their ancestors migrated here in the mid-1800s. Hard-working farm family from West Finley. Audrey worked hard even when she was young she went to live with uncle Emmett Carson since he was a bachelor—then when she returned home, she was sent to her grandparent's home to care for them.
She did plowing with a team of horses, planted and weeded the gardens, and helped bring in the harvest. She said she was really good at hay staking. She also kept care of the house
She sometimes said she got married so she could do the work for her own family. Most consider them to be the greatest generation. They lived through a depression and won a world war.
Paul walked across Europe, fighting for his country. Audrey wanted to join the military but was needed at home. When Paul came home, they rebuilt this country to be what it is; the land of the free and home of the brave. Like many of their generation, they were the salt of the earth.
They started a church in Easton and built a family. They worked hard to build a community where they lived and stayed true to their faith and beliefs even as the world changed around them. Even up to recent times, despite growing aliments, Audrey was delivering meals on wheels. Paul and Audrey will be best remembered for their work with children and charities that helped build a summer camp in Western Pennsylvania. Such was their efforts that when the camp when finished it had but one building with air conditioning and there was a room named the Sheller Room, kept in reserve for when they visited.
They in many ways represent a generation and a way of life we have all but seen disappear.
They have left us and gone away, but also shone a light on how to live a life. It was my honor to care for her in her last days. She was a wonderful mother and will truly be missed.
