John “Doc” Jarosz, 90, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in Washington Hospital after a brief illness.
Doc was born on May 17, 1934, in Wolfdale, the son of the late Paul and Katarzyna Jarosz. He attended Wolfdale Elementary and Trinity High School. He worked for the Tri-State Engineering Company as a machinist and assistant foreman for 30 years before retiring in 1981.
On September 17, 1955, he married the love of his life, Joanne Lauther, at Immaculate Conception Church in Washington. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage before Joanne’s passing in 2002. They had three children together: Kathleen, Rebecca, and David.
Doc was extremely proud of his Polish heritage. He enjoyed listening to Polka music, dancing, and playing the accordion. He especially enjoyed his mothers cooking of authentic Polish dishes. Doc and Joanne were something to see at any wedding reception when they hit the dance floor. Doc’s signature dance, and the dance he was best known for, was simply and fittingly known as The ‘Doc’ and people loved watching him do that dance.
He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, and during his lifetime he saw the Pittsburgh sports teams win an astounding 15 championships. Doc enjoyed attending Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball games with his family, and together they saw the Pirates win Game 5 of the 1979 World Series, went to the 1994 All Star game, and even watched together with his family the Pirates win a game in person at historic Forbes Field in 1969.
In 1946, during his sandlot baseball days, Doc was the king of the hill and the number one pitcher in the league. Doc posted a spectacular pitching record of 21 wins and just seven loses for the Polish A.C.’s, featuring his go to pitch, an almost unhittable knuckleball. One of Doc’s favorite things to do was read the Sunday edition of the comics which at times made him laugh uncontrollably. In the summertime, Doc enjoyed taking his family on vacation to Myrtle Beach South Carolina.
Doc absolutely loved celebrating Christmas with his family, and in his later years , he really enjoyed going to Susan and Brads for Christmas dinner and feasting on raw shrimp, Brad’s slow roasted Prime rib and Susan’s Cheesy potato casserole. Every year Doc looked forward to going to Susan and Brad’s at Christmastime, and it brought him so much joy and happiness in his life.
Doc was a member of the Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church. He was a social member of the American Legion Post 639 in Claysville and a 50-year lifetime member of the Moose Lodge 22 in Washington. Doc also played dartball.
