John W. McCullough

John Walter McCullough, 90, of Claysville, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 3, 2025. He was born on January 19, 1935, in Claysville, a son of the late Clyde and Margaret McCullough.

John was a 1953 graduate of Claysville High School. In 1958, John married his high school sweetheart, Jean M. Post McCullough. They had spent 67 loving years together in June 2025.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960, stationed in Worms, Germany. 

In 1962, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Waynesburg College and went on to receive his master’s degree in education in 1976 from West Virginia University.

John began his career as a teacher in Prosperity in 1961 and later became an elementary principal for 16 years. He retired in August 1997 after 37 dedicated years of service to the McGuffey School District.

A faithful and active member of the United Presbyterian Church in Claysville, John served as an elder, deacon, and choir member. He also taught Sunday School for nine years. John was also a proud Mason and a member of the Odd Fellows Club.

He enjoyed traveling, golfing, reading, exercising, playing darts and spending time with loved ones. Above all, he was a devoted husband and a loving father to his daughter, Johnna, who was the greatest joy of his life. He is also survived by his brothers Ed McCullough (Barbara) and Ernie McCullough (Nila) 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Jean Strott and brother Bob McCullough
