Oliver Sprowls Jr. "Dee" Obituary

Oliver Nelson Sprowls Jr., “Dee” 75, of Claysville, PA, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024, in his home with his loving family surrounding him. 

He was born in Claysville, PA, on April 20, 1948, the son of the late Oliver N. Sprowls Sr. and Marilyn E. Plants Sprowls. 

Oliver graduated from McGuffey High School in 1966 and attended Farrier School in the state of Washington after graduating. He received his degrees in AI and Farrier for horses.  

He began working for Diamond M. Farms Inc. in Washington, where he worked as a herdsman.

Oliver served in The United States Marine Corps from 1966 to 1972. During that time, he served two tours in the Vietnam War, received a Purple Heart for being wounded, and several medals including a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and a Marksmanship Badge with a rifle. 

He was an owner/operator truck driver, working for Wilkie Construction and Besl and Schneider Tankers. 

He started his postal service career in 1973. He began as a clerk/carrier in NC, went on to be supervisor of Delivery/Collections at the Washington post office, was OIC (Officer in Charge) at Duquesne, and then became postmaster of Donora, Burgettstown, and Claysville where he retired in December of 2010

On May 8, 1993 he married Sandra Kaye Morgan Sprowls, they spent 41 loving years total together. 

He enjoyed dragracing and motorcycle racing at Coastal Plains Raceway in Jacksonville, NC, where he received many trophies. He loved working with his many teams of horses and farming. Oliver participated in hundreds of pony pulls with his father and brothers, receiving many ribbons for winning. He was also a registered member of the Halflinger Registry.

Oliver was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and he always found joy in time spent with his grandchildren.

He was a member of The Claysville American Legion Hunt-Kennedy Post 639 and The Claysville Volunteer Fire Department since 2002, serving as a Tresurer, EMT, and firefighter. 

Oliver is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by, his loving wife Sandra K. Sprowls, daughter Susan (Brian) Patterson, son Michael (Carrie) Sprowls Jr., grandchildren Elizabeth Sprowls, Nicholas Sprowls, and Emily Patterson, brothers Michael Sprowls (Linda Mounts) and Timothy (Catherine) Sprowls, sisters Darlene Dutton, Mary Lou Sprowls, and Sharon (Stanley) Gump, and several nieces and nephews. 

Friends and family will be received on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, from 2 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm at Young Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. 219 Main Street, Claysville, PA 15323.
