Robert W. Walker
Robert W. Walker, formerly of Claysville, PA, passed away in Washington, PA at the age of 103 on July 16th, 2023. Mr. Walker was born on January 20, 1920, in Canton, Ohio, the son of Delbert E. Walker and Gladys O’Wesney Walker. He attended Minerva High School in Minerva, Ohio. He married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Peterson, on March 4, 1940.
Raised on the former President McKinley’s farm in Ohio, he and Catherine moved to Claysville in 1951 with their daughter Linda and son Del. He was a general insurance agent for many years, later owning and operating his own insurance agency.
Mr. Walker enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the 86th Infantry Division, Company G. He was awarded the Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal, also earning ribbons for his service in both the Asiatic Pacific and European Theaters.
Mr. Walker was an active member of the Claysville United Methodist Church, where he served on multiple committees and was instrumental in the updating and renovating of the sanctuary. He also belonged to the Claysville Boro Council, the Claysville Volunteer Fire Department, and the Claysville Donegal Joint Municipal Authority, which he chaired for 15 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 639 and served on the Country Draft Board for 16 years. He served for many years as the American Red Cross County Chairman, belonged to Rotary International, and was a member of the Grange for 60 years. Mr. Walker served Meals on Wheels for many years. His family noted that he often delivered meals to elderly individuals who were younger than he was.
Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Dorothy Walker Unkefer and Virginia Walker Wilenius. He is survived by his wife of 83 years, Catherine Peterson Walker, his daughter Linda Walker Wilkerson, and son Del Walker. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Joseph Wilkerson (Kathie), Lori Wilkerson Hilliard (Bruce), Scott Wilkerson (Sharon), Barry Walker (Michelle), and Kelly Walker, 12 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Walker enjoyed golf, woodworking, and travel, but most of all spending time with his family and friends.
Services are private, with full military honors and interment at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends and family to donate to the charity of their choice in Mr. Walker’s memory.
